Mohsen Rostami, PhD, PEng
Mohsen Rostami, BSc, MSc, MSc, PhD, PEng, is an aerospace engineer, researcher, and educator with more than a decade of experience across aerospace engineering, flight dynamics and control, multidisciplinary design optimization, simulation, autonomous systems, and immersive technologies. He completed his PhD in Aerospace Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) with an A+ GPA, where his research focused on multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of small conventional and eVTOL aircraft. His broader research background also includes uncertainty-aware design, trajectory optimization, stratospheric airships, flight simulation, extended reality (XR), digital twins, and human–machine interaction.
Since 2024, Dr. Rostami’s research has increasingly focused on spacecraft operations and orbital decision support. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at TMU, he has been developing an Immersive Space Mission Control Centre integrating orbital simulation, XR, digital twins, real-time visualization, multi-user collaboration, and human-in-the-loop decision support. This work has subsequently expanded into a focused research program in orbital conjunction assessment, collision-risk analysis, robust manoeuvre selection, covariance-aware decision support, and multi-conjunction manoeuvre planning, with the longer-term objective of advancing intelligent, risk-aware, and human-centred spacecraft operations.
Dr. Rostami also has extensive industrial experience. His roles have included Aero/Flight Dynamics/Stability & Control Engineer, Aerospace Simulation Engineer, design team lead at Columbiad Launch Services Inc., and AI+XR Project Lead at Veyond Metaverse Inc. His work has involved stratospheric airship design, flight simulation, XR-enabled command-and-control systems, AI-assisted digital twins, computer vision, synthetic data, immersive telepresence, and autonomous-system supervision. He holds master’s degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Tehran and Mechanical Engineering from York University.
As an educator, Dr. Rostami teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at TMU and has also taught at the University of Toronto. His teaching portfolio includes Flight Dynamics and Control of Aircraft, Aircraft Performance, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Vibrations, Integrated Manufacturing, Process and Engineering Optimization, and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of Aerospace Systems. His teaching philosophy emphasizes strong engineering fundamentals, active learning, practical simulation, and connecting mathematical theory with real-world engineering systems and decision-making.
Dr. Rostami is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, Canada, and a member of the Professional Engineers Ontario. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed journal papers, numerous conference publications, patents, book chapters, and over 250 non-academic aerospace articles covering aircraft and spacecraft technologies. He is a member of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI), Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME), and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and regularly serves as a reviewer for leading aerospace and engineering journals and research proposals.
